There are many times when my picky 3 year old son would rather drink his meals than eat them. It used to stress me out, because all he would want was milk, and then I would worry that he wasn’t getting enough nutrients. After doing some research, I came across an internet article on the “Ask Dr. Sears” website, Feeding the Picky Eater: 17 Tips. The 5th tip talked about letting your toddler drink his meal instead. I thought, GENIUS, why didn’t I think of that? So I started making smoothies. AND, it was like a load off of my shoulders when it came to mealtime, most days.
Here is the recipe for one of his favorite smoothies, a Pomegranate Avocado Smoothie. To my surprise, it wasn’t chocolate. My son drinks cow’s milk without any issues, but I like to make his smoothies with milk alternatives, like coconut milk or almond milk. This way, I feel like he isn’t have too much dairy that day. The avocado provides loads of healthy fats and makes the smoothie rich and thick. The pomegranate juice is a super-foods powerhouse and sweetens it just enough. I add a half scoop of vanilla protein powder to the smoothie on days that I feel Jeremy isn’t taking in enough, and I few chia seeds for fiber.
Toss all of the ingredients for your pomegranate avocado smoothie into your blender, and blend away! If you have it, I highly recommend using a powerful blender, like the Vitamix or Blendtec. Other blenders may not completely blend or puree away the chia seeds, so the texture of the smoothie will not be completely smooth. This is a big deal for my son! Jeremy has a thing with the texture of some of his foods, and a smooth smoothie is a must for him. Never mind this suggestion if the texture of the seeds don’t bother you. Enjoy!
